The global crises last year called for more action from NGOs like Helvetas in various regions. In particular, the Ukraine war, the flood disaster in Pakistan and the drought in Ethiopia increased the financial needs of the Swiss organization for development cooperation and humanitarian aid. In 2022, Helvetas was able to receive more donations than ever before: CHF 45.6 million

In 2022, Helvetas was present in many places where major crises shook the world and expanded its development and humanitarian projects in several regions. The increased need for financing met with an unprecedented response: the non-profit organization collected CHF 45.6 million in donations, more than ever before. This corresponds to an increase of 18% compared to the previous year.

The donors for humanitarian aid in Ukraine, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Sri Lanka showed particular solidarity. In addition to donations from private individuals, the contributions from foundations, companies, cantons and communes also increased last year, as did donations from legacies and wills.

Emergency aid for those in need worldwide

After the outbreak of the Ukraine war almost a year ago, Helvetas reacted quickly: first in neighboring Moldova, where the NGO provides refugees with the essentials at the border crossing and supports Moldovan families who take in Ukrainians. Later, Helvetas also started humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Together with local organizations, the NGO helps, for example, to repair houses damaged by bombs and to give people access to clean drinking water.

Thanks to its decades-long presence in Pakistan, Helvetas was able to quickly and easily take action to help those affected after the devastating floods last summer.

Thanks to many years of experience, local networks and good local knowledge, Helvetas was also able to participate in the humanitarian response to the terrible famine in a targeted and efficient manner in Ethiopia.

Helvetas’ long-term cooperation with the local population, civil society and the private sector extends to around 30 countries. The NGO is committed to basic needs such as access to water and food, creates training and income opportunities and encourages disadvantaged people – especially women – to have a say. The goal: fair opportunities worldwide.

The annual and financial reports will be published in May 2023.
