The municipality of Bastia shaken. Three people, including two deputies to the nationalist mayor of Bastia, have been indicted in an investigation into possible fraud in electoral proxies during the municipal elections of 2020, we learned on Saturday from the Bastia prosecutor. The three were indicted for undermining the sincerity of a ballot, said Arnaud Viornery, confirming information from France 3 Corse.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the two elected officials in question are Don Petru Luccioni, delegate for social cohesion, intergenerational links and social housing and Laura Orsini-Sauli, delegate for health and disability. They were released without judicial review.

Contacted by AFP, the two elected officials did not wish to comment. In another investigation into suspicions of electoral fraud during these municipal elections, 13 people had been placed in police custody last December as part of a judicial investigation carried out by a Parisian investigating judge which followed a preliminary investigation. opened in June 2020 by the Bastia public prosecutor’s office.

Conflicting campaign

The outgoing nationalist mayor, Pierre Savelli, was re-elected as mayor of Bastia with 49.37% of the votes cast ahead of the broad union list of Jean-Sébastien De Casalta (39.73%), ranging from the Radical Left Party ( PRG) of Jean Zuccharelli to the regionalist right of Jean-Martin Mondoloni. The Bastia electoral campaign had taken place in a climate of conflict, with the filing of several complaints.

In October 2021, the Council of State had rejected a request for invalidation of the municipal ballots filed by the Bastia municipal opposition movement. He had nevertheless validated the cancellation by the administrative court of Bastia of the election of the 43rd municipal councilor.

The administrative justice had estimated that, “given the importance of the difference in votes in the second round” between the nationalist list and the opposition union list, “these irregularities did not justify the cancellation of the elections in their whole”.
