Municipalities rely on Tempo 30

Daniel Glöckner would like to have 30 km/h zones on all inner-city streets in Gelnhausen. So far, the main streets of the Hessian town are state roads, in which the municipality can hardly intervene. State roads are subject to special structural requirements, explains the mayor with an FDP party book. “There are many specifications as to what a state road must look like,” says Glöckner. Municipalities have had little power so far, they could not structurally change the streets on their own initiative or even provide speed limits. “We want to redesign the streets in a contemporary way, slow down traffic to make inner cities more livable,” demands Glöckner.

His party colleague, Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing, has come a long way towards accommodating him. The federal cabinet approved its draft law on Wednesday. This should give the municipalities more leeway in their transport policy. If his draft becomes law and if the federal states also agree to a corresponding reform of the road traffic regulations, the municipalities will in future be able to set up easier zebra crossings and cycle paths, 30 km/h zones and special lanes for buses or electric cars. Until now, they could only do this when dangers to the safety or ease of traffic had to be averted. In future, the goals of environmental and climate protection, urban development and health are to be included in the relevant regulations with equal priority.
