The municipality of Matrei in Osttirol, which is fighting against the impending insolvency because of a debt of around 35 million euros, presented its more than 100 creditors with a new repayment plan at an information event in Lienz on Friday. This provides for an interest-free, 100 percent settlement of all liabilities in the coming years, it said. Mayor Raimund Steiner was confident that the plan would go through.

Next week, a “large part” of the creditors should have already given feedback, Steiner explained to the APA. A council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday. Over 40 believers were personally present at the event in Lienz. The mayor gave his impression that a “majority” of them had already signaled approval or reacted positively to the repayment plan. Of course, it is now also necessary to talk to the financial creditors, i.e. the affected banks and credit institutions. Those with liabilities of up to 50,000 euros are to be serviced in full this year. Those who ask for between 50,000 and 100,000 should be served by April 2024 at the latest. Creditors with more than 100,000 euros in liabilities are to be settled “in full” over the next four years. The state of Tyrol is the largest creditor with 3.7 million euros (including the transfer payments from the first half of 2023) and “will accept a repayment of this sum without interest over the next 15 years,” it said. Tyrol’s governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) described the present plan as a “fair offer”. “The state of Tyrol, as one of the largest creditors, will in any case approve this repayment plan,” he announced in a broadcast. The black-red state government had also already promised to help Matrei with 6.6 million euros from the community equalization fund over the next three years. Mayor Steiner emphasized that the repayments for Matrei will be “a real effort”. They also commit themselves to “numerous austerity measures” in order to achieve this at all. With the financial help of the state, however, this challenge could be mastered.ÖVP and former mayor in the line of fireThe Tyrolean ÖVP had recently repeatedly come under fire from the opposition due to the cause. The ruling party was accused of not intervening earlier and of allowing the long-standing ÖVP mayor Andreas Köll to do it for too long. The People’s Party denied this. It has been known for a long time that the market town has significant financial problems. Again and again there was talk of oversized infrastructure projects or investments, for example in the community football stadium, the Tauern Stadium. Köll, who was mayor for 33 years – until last year – and also a member of the state parliament and federal councilor, was repeatedly criticized. The political veteran recently came out vehemently in his own defense.
