Mural unveiled in honor of Jesus of the Three Powers in the Historic Center
On September 28, 2024, a new mural was unveiled at the Zone 1 of Guatemala City in honor of Jesus of the Three Powersthe Virgin of Dolores y San Felipe Neri. The work is located on the corner of 4th. avenue and 7th. street, being the result of the work of two Guatemalan artists: Carlos Temal y Edgar Ligorria. This mural was conceived as a tribute to the Brotherhood of Jesus Nazarene of the Three Powerswhich celebrates its centenary this year.
In an interview for the media “Periodismo Católico”, Carlos Temal expressed that the creative process of the mural began two months ago, when Temal and Ligorría came together to design the work. Using sketches and reference photographs, the artists developed the composition of the three images that would form the mural. Once they presented the proposal to the brotherhood, they supported them with some materials, which allowed the project to take shape.
The process of creating the mural
The creation of the work began on September 16 and continued uninterruptedly until its conclusion on September 27. It was 10 days of hard work, under the sun and facing the difficulties of working in a public space. Despite some setbacks, the artists were able to complete the work on time.
Carlos Temal expressed his gratitude on his social networks to all the people who came to see the creation process. In his words, he received many positive comments and congratulations that appreciated the effort and the result. For his part, Edgar Ligorría also shared on his networks what this project meant to him, highlighting the learning and satisfaction of having worked alongside Temal on this artistic tribute.
Main characteristics of the mural
The mural includes representative details of the images of Jesus of the Three Powers, the Virgin of Dolores and San Felipe Neri, with faces that capture their essence. Furthermore, the work incorporates distinctive elements of Guatemalan Holy Week, such as Nazarenesmen dressed in purple tunics and hoods, as well as angels and banners that refer to the Lent season.
The day of the unveiling was Saturday, September 28 during the passage of the procession of Jesus of the Three Powers. The procession, which is part of the celebrations of the brotherhood centenarywas accompanied by many faithful, who applauded when they saw the mural for the first time. A very emotional moment!
