Birmingham: Malayalam player M. Sreesankar with a historic achievement in the Commonwealth Games. Won silver medal in long jump.It is the first time that India has won a medal in men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games.

Sreesankar won silver with a jump of 8.08 meters. Gold medalist Lakhwan Nairn of the Bahamas jumped the same distance but managed to clear a better distance in his second attempt which put him ahead of Sreesankar. Sreesankar cleared the medal winning distance of 8.08m in his fifth attempt. In the first three jumps, Sreesankar’s jump was 7.60m, 7.84m and 7.84m. In the fourth attempt, he crossed eight meters but was fouled by a centimeter.

India had two medal hopes in long jump. Another Malayali player Muhammad Anees Yahia also competed in the final. Muhammad Anees jumped a distance of 7.97 and placed fifth. Anees found the best distance in the sixth attempt. South Africa’s Joanne Van Vooren (8.06m) won the bronze.

Sreesankar’s is India’s second medal in athletics at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Earlier, Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in high jump.

Sreesankar, who has participated in the last two World Athletics Championships and the Tokyo Olympics, has won a major medal in senior international competition.

Sreesankar, a native of Palakkad Yakara, former Indian athletes S. Murali and K.S. He is also the son of Bijimol.
