Music as therapy: conference of the IRCCS Maugeri of Pavia to take stock with an eye to the future

by time news

Music can help improve the quality of the care pathway of people who are experiencing moments of fragility during a hospital stay or even in a hospice, as a support for palliative care.

For this reason, for some years now the IRCCS Maugeri of Pavia has chosen to invest in the Music Therapy Research Laboratory that aims to treat the patient through targeted interventions that make use of music. The aim is also to measure, using a scientifically oriented approach, the actual effectiveness of this practice in different clinical contexts, such as at the end of life.

In the Music Therapy Laboratory, the use of music therapy has been tested in the context of stroke, Parkinson’s disease, ALS and dementia, but also in Pain Medicine, work-related stress and in the oncological context (Radiotherapy).

The current and future projects will be discussed at the conference (ECM accredited, 3 training credits) from the title “Palliative care and music therapy”, which will be held inside the ICS Maugeri Congress Center in Pavia on September 21st to deepen the knowledge currently available and reflect on the developments of this discipline in the clinical field.

For patients undergoing palliative care, which often involves a rapid and unpredictable evolution of the disease, a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach is necessary that takes into account psychological, spiritual and social needs, as well as physical ones. Often projects such as music therapy are activated together with the treatments already in place (avoid simultaneous) for cancer patients to alleviate suffering and address the problems and needs of the patient and the caregiver.

«Palliative care providers are taking care of their patients globally with an increasingly holistic approach, combining complementary therapies with conventional medicine treatments, always following scientific rigor. In particular, with regard to music therapy, with various projects in parallel with treatments, increasing attention is being generated – explains the Dr.. Davide Albanese of the Palliative Care and Pain Medicine Unit of Maugeri and one of the scientific directors of the conference –. Over the months we have collected very interesting data that emerged from the experience with patients and from the activity of the Music Therapy Research Laboratory born in Maugeri. The conference will be an opportunity to study them in depth together with the participants and at the same time promote new ideas for research and reflection».

Recently, Maugeri has also introduced the use of new technologies associated with sound and music in the neuromotor field. Furthermore, research techniques applied to music therapy that derive from the computer field are being studied in depth.

«Music can play an important role in healthcare – concludes the prof. Alfredo Bray, Head of the Maugeri Music Therapy Research Laboratory and scientific director of the event together with Dr. Albanese . It provides a real contribution to alleviate the physical and psychological symptoms of patients. It is a powerful tool that can also facilitate doctor-patient communication, but also reach the deepest parts of the person. We want to understand to what extent, and through which specific interventions, music can prove useful in a given treatment path».

The conference of September 21st will start at 8.30 am; at the end of the interventions (programme available at the link https://sc.qlearning.it/pluginfile.php/14395/course/summary/Brochure_PV_21.09.24%20-%20PAV33%2024.pdf?tim) a musical moment is also planned by the Verdi Conservatory of Milan.
