Musk: Tesla’s fully autonomous driving system will be 25% more expensive to $15,000

Elon Musk announced that the price of Tesla’s “Full Autonomous Driving” (FSD) system will increase next month in North America by 25% from $12,000 to $15,000.

“After the widespread launch of the beta version, the price of the system will increase in North America on September 5 to $15,000,” wrote Musk, who serves as CEO of the electric car manufacturer, on Twitter, adding that the distribution of the version is expected to expand in the coming weeks. “This model is a big step Come on,” he added.

However, Musk noted that the current price of $12,000 will be maintained for those who purchase cars before September 5th. It was not clear from the announcement if the company intends to raise the price of the subscription to the system, which currently stands at $199 per month.

The price of the system has risen regularly in recent years. At the time of launch in 2019, it was $5,000, which jumped within a year to $10,000, and to $12,000 last September. Tesla’s least expensive Model 3 starts around $47,000, while the Model Y starts at $66,000.

Despite the promising name, the system for autonomous driving does not allow for complete autonomous driving, and Tesla adds a warning to drivers to stay alert and keep their hands on the wheel even when the system is activated. Earlier this month, the California Department of Transportation accused Tesla of false advertising regarding the promotion of the system and other features of self-driving. The brand’s cars also captured a U.S. Highway Safety Administration report on crashes involving automatic driver assistance features. Tesla accounted for 70 percent of about 400 crashes reported over 11 months. However, regulators said there was not enough information to draw conclusions, but They emphasized that they would continue to investigate the matter.
