It looks like the showdown between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg isn’t going to happen after all. That would be a shame. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton fought it out in “Fight Club”, in the end we were smarter – and got rid of one of them.

Even two decades after David Fincher’s “Fight Club”, many film fans are not sure what is actually to be seen there. Do both the protagonist (Edward Norton) and Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) really exist? Or just one of them? Is it a delusion? And if so, which of the two is delusional? Luckily, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have been promising a cage fight for weeks now (although it looks like Musk is about to back off – “shoulder problems!” -) because their example is a great way to explain the film.

As a reminder, the unnamed protagonist works for a major automaker in a major American city (the same could be said of Musk) and attends support groups for issues he doesn’t even have, like alcoholism and cancer (that Musk has Asperger’s, eh he claimed, many also doubt).

His life changes when he meets one Tyler Durden, a dubious soap salesman. In a deserted parking lot, the two engage in friendly fistfights: “I want you to hit me as hard as you can!” Other men catch their eye, drawn to the prospect of a fight, and they form the Fight Club ‘ in the basement of a bar.

One can explain this brawl club with the psychologist’s off-the-shelf tool, the testosterone these alphas must churn out, the frustration at their meaningless, consumer-oriented lives, and the desire to belong to a secret lodge. But with Norton and Pitt there are completely different reasons behind it.

The reasons why Musk and Zuckerberg want to fight and then don’t are also – at first glance – not difficult to understand. The two have been picking on each other since Musk claimed “Instagram causes depression” and “Facebook drives me crazy”; both Zuckerberg platforms. In “Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index”, the ranking where the 500 richest people in the world can check every day whether their wealth has overtaken another billionaire, Musk and Zuckerberg regularly fight for one of the top spots. And, of course, Zuckerberg’s new social networking service, Threads, is intended to be a killer for Musk’s Twitter, now called X.

Now, unlike some David Lynch films, David Fincher actually has a clear explanation of what happened. The protagonist has a dissociative identity disorder, different personality states take turns taking control of his thoughts, feelings and actions. Put simply: Tyler Durden as an independent person does not exist, she is imaginary. That shows in the final showdown, after which Durden is gone.

Does Zuckerberg actually exist?

A Musk-Zuckerberg showdown should serve a similar function. At its end, Musk’s dissociative disorder could go away. Probably “Zuckerberg” never existed, all the photos and videos of him were just early forms of AI and the whole world fell for it. Then Musk can continue to pursue Durden’s “Project Chaos” undisturbed, which boils down to disrupting world affairs until nothing works anymore.
