The obesity treatment drug ‘Wigobi’, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk cited as his diet secret, is expected to be released in Korea around the middle of next month. As the options for obesity patients increase, fierce competition among obesity treatments is expected during the season of high blood pressure.

On the 10th, Novo Nordisk Korea announced that the obesity treatment drug ‘Wigobi’ will be launched in Korea in mid-October. The product to be launched will be in the form of an injection with the drug pre-filled, and all five doses of 0.25-2.4 mg approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will be launched.

Wigobi is one of the obesity treatment drugs of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) series that has recently been in short supply worldwide. Saxenda, which was launched by Novo Nordisk before Wigobi, was launched in Korea in 2018. While Saxenda must be administered once a day, Wigobi only needs to be administered once a week, so it is expected to be chosen by many patients due to its convenience.

The weight loss effect of Wigobi is also slightly greater than that of Saxenda. In a previous clinical trial, Saxenda was shown to reduce body weight by an average of 6%, while Wigobi reduced body weight by about 15%.

The variable is Eli Lilly’s ‘Maunjaro’, which is expected to be released within the year. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety approved Maunjaro as an obesity treatment in July of this year. Following its previous use as a supplement to improve diabetes blood sugar control, it can now be prescribed as an obesity treatment. Maunjaro was shown to reduce body weight by about 20% in clinical trials. It is currently the treatment with the highest expected effectiveness among the GLP-1 series of obesity treatments.

However, as the demand for Maunjaro exploded worldwide, a supply shortage occurred in the United States. Maunjaro was in short supply from 2022 until the second quarter of this year (April to June), but Eli Lilly recently announced that the supply problem was partially resolved by securing additional production routes.
