MV Odyssey Stranded in Cambodia After Fuel Costs Surge

Two hundred and three passengers were abruptly ordered to disembark the residential cruise ship MV Odyssey in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Its Fort Lauderdale-based operator suspended operations over skyrocketing fuel expenses tied to the conflict in Iran.

Guests were given just seven hours to pack their belongings and leave their floating homes when the journey of the luxury residential vessel came to a sudden halt. The abrupt suspension marked the end of a multi-year global voyage. It had promised retirees and long-term travelers an endless life at sea.

Villa Vie Residences Suspends Voyages Over Rising Fuel Costs

Monthly marine gas oil expenses surged far beyond historical averages. Villa Vie Residences halted the three-year circumnavigation while operating out of Florida. Company statements cited sharply rising fuel costs in the regions where the vessel operated. Expenses per cabin had historically hovered around $1,800 monthly.

Those outlays reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 per cabin following supply disruptions in Southeast Asia driven by the conflict in Iran. Internal financial documents reviewed by CBS News revealed that the company was already millions of dollars in the hole. It owed hundreds of thousands to port agents, fueling companies, food vendors, and crew members before the final shutdown.

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been curtailed since the outbreak of the conflict. Founder Mikael Petterson stated that oil costs sat between $600 and $700 per metric ton for the ship before the war in Iran began in late February. Petroleum fuel supplies were squeezed, driving up prices throughout Southeast Asia. Average monthly operating costs for the company reached $3.1 million against a maximum potential revenue of $2.5 million.

Passengers Face Uncertainty After Sudden Landing in Cambodia

Sihanoukville Autonomous Port left 203 passengers and 156 crew members stranded upon the vessel’s arrival. Several disembarked travelers reported receiving minimal local support from the company after being forced ashore, while the operator stated it was coordinating temporary living arrangements. Lynn Montoya remarked to reporters that trying to pack up an entire home in seven hours was an impossible task. Long Dimanche, the deputy governor of Preah Sihanouk province, noted that the ship was initially scheduled to depart on Wednesday.

Carol Larson, 69, purchased her cabin for $120,000 in installments alongside monthly maintenance fees, and some residents had invested significant portions of their retirement savings into the venture. She told the Associated Press that she blamed President Donald Trump for the conflict-driven oil price spikes. Her sister, Crystal Lavering, also purchased her own cabin aboard the ship, where she noted her health improved to the point that she no longer needed a cane to walk. Other passengers, such as Rina Cavazza, a pilates instructor from Brisbane, Australia, noted that while worst-case scenarios were anticipated, the reality still came as a shock.

Management Seeks Emergency Funds and Donations

Management attempted multiple financial interventions months before the disembarkation order. The company asked residents for loans and donations, and later introduced a VIP program allowing current passengers to buy additional cabins to generate emergency capital.

Passengers stepped in by collecting cash outside ship restaurants to distribute $100 to every non-officer crew member, as crew salary payments also lagged.

The vessel was bought by Villa Vie Residences in 2023 after being originally built in 1993 and previously operated under different names by several cruise lines before being becalmed by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Reactivating the ship cost the startup $15 million more than expected due to extensive mechanical overhauls required prior to its launch from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024.

A group of displaced residents is purchase the ship themselves while management evaluates its restructuring window, but whether they can raise sufficient capital remains unknown.
