MWC 2023: 5G will surpass 4G; know when

by time news

The GSMA, a global association that represents the interests of mobile operators around the world, revealed during MWC 2023 that 5G should become the most popular means of internet access by the end of this decade.

4G arrived in 2009 and concentrates around 60% of accesses to the world’s mobile network. By 2030, this percentage should drop to 36%. At the same time, 5G will become more affordable, overtaking 4G in 2029.

The GSMA report details

  • 5G will overtake 4G in 2029 to become the dominant mobile technology, with adoption in over 85% of major markets by 2030.
  • Global 5G connections will pass 5 billion by the end of the decade, with the industry on track to reach 1.5 billion connections in 2023.
  • 5G will add nearly $1 trillion to the global economy in 2030 and will benefit all sectors, with services (46%) and manufacturing (33%) taking the largest share;
  • The economic contribution of the mobile sector will exceed $6 trillion by 2030.
  • Most operators expect private wireless networks to account for up to 20% of their total enterprise revenues, driven by improvements in 5G capabilities.

5G arriving in new countries

New figures from GSMA Intelligence show that 5G connections are expected to double over the next two years, accelerated by technological innovations and new network deployments in more than 30 countries in 2023 alone. Of the new networks to be deployed this year, 15 are expected to be Standalone 5G networks.

Growth will also come from key Asia/Pacific and Latin American markets such as Brazil and India, which have recently launched 5G networks. India will be especially significant, with the expansion of Airtel and Jio services in 2023 – which is expected to be key to continued adoption in the region. GSMA Intelligence predicts that there will be four 5G networks in India by the end of 2025, accounting for an additional 145 million users. Many of the new 5G markets scheduled to launch networks in 2023 are in developing regions in Africa – including Ethiopia and Ghana – and Asia.
