Rayados Maintain Liga MX Lead as opening 2025 Season Heats Up

The Liga MX’s Opening 2025 tournament is reaching a critical juncture,wiht teams battling for position as the regular phase progresses. After eight matchdays, the landscape is becoming clearer as contenders emerge and the fight for playoff spots intensifies.

Rayados currently top the league standings with 21 points, securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Querétaro in a match played at La Corregidora. However, their lead is precarious, as Cruz Azul remains hot on their heels. Cruz azul, remarkably, is the only team in the league to remain undefeated through the first eight games, accumulating 20 points after a 1-0 win against Pachuca in Hidalgo.

The National Classic saw a significant upset, with Chivas defeating Club América, pushing André Jardine’s team down to third place with 17 points. Following closely behind are toluca (16 points), UANL Tigers (14 points), and Just (13 points). The battle for a place in the coveted top six – guaranteeing direct qualification to the quarterfinals of the Liguilla – is fierce.

Currently occupying the play-in spots are Pachuca, Pumas, FC Juárez, and León, all with between 11 and 13 points. Eight teams will ultimately be eliminated after the completion of the 17 regular-season matchdays.

Beyond the standings, clubs are also focused on complying with the league’s minors rule. This regulation mandates that each of the 18 teams provide a minimum of 1,170 minutes of play to players under the age of 23.
