Exterior Night is the (first) series by Marco Bellocchio, broadcast on Rai 1 in three evenings, on 14, 15 and 17, with an unprecedented close-up programming mode.

Gifuni, how did you prepare as the statesman?

«It was a long immersion over the years, the theatrical show, the film about the Piazza Fontana massacre in which I was Moro 50 years old. Now this river of uninterrupted words during the 55 days of imprisonment where there is also an unpublished Moro, it is as if it were bringing into play the rainbow of human impulses. This lengthy elaboration gave me the opportunity to do what every interpreter is looking for: forget everything and let go. I have read Moro’s speeches, seen the interpretations of Herlitzka and Gian Maria Volonté: we have looked for a key that focuses on the moods that are stirred up in each character. As if politics could not be disconnected from the human affair ».

Is there Moro’s loneliness?

“There is anger, faith, offense, resentment, one feels the victim of a betrayal, and there is a feeling of very strong loneliness. It is one of the ghosts of our history, bodies that have not been given a proper burial, and they ask that the story be told again ».

“We tried for months, until the decision to remove almost everything and to rely on the idea that this evocation of a ghost, if it starts from the inside, also produces physical similarity. I wanted the actor not to disappear behind the mask. The only thing I asked was to raise the hairline to create a shift in the proportion of the face ».

What scenes are you left with?

«The most emotionally difficult ones are kidnapping and death, because you shoot in the same places, via Fani and via Caetani; the most demanding and liberating is the final confession ».

The last words that Moro writes are terrible.

«I would like to understand with my little mortal eyes how we will see later, if there was a light it would be beautiful. It seems to be or not to be, it really is a Shakespearean tragedy, except that it is real life. Moro is the Hamlet of Maglie, the town where he was born, for the hyper reflection of analyzing the thought ».

“In the series there are Christological elements, and there is the great scene of Moro carrying the cross like Jesus, with the notables of the DC praying behind”.

What was it like shooting the cross scene?

“Knowing that we were going to shoot for many hours, Marco, with uncommon regard on the sets, told me that he would have a cross built with a light wood, I thanked him but I replied that I would have preferred the real weight,” pretend ” the weight would have been more complicated. The result is that my back has been affected for several weeks but a tragic and visionary scene of great expressive force has emerged ».

“It is not just the memory of an Italy that no longer exists. We try to mend a thread that has been torn to pieces, with shamelessness and violence, suggesting to young people that memory is useless, boring, divisive. There is an obsession, from many political parties, a litany of saying that we are a new Italy and memory is a hindrance. As if we lived in an eternal present. Pier Paolo Pasolini said that a country without memory is a country without history ».
