In Lyon, the year begins with a beautiful love story, within the OL women’s team. And by all accounts, it should lead to marriage. Australian Ellie Carpenter and Dutchwoman Danielle Van de Donk announced their engagement on Monday in an Instagram post. “My partner for life,” wrote Danielle, wearing her engagement ring, as a simple comment under the photo of the publication, bringing together the two young women against the backdrop of the emerald sea.

It was at OL that they met. The Australian Ellie Carpenter, 23-year-old right side, was recruited by the Lyon club in the summer of 2020. The Dutch Danielle van de Donk, 32-year-old midfielder, joined a year later, in June 2021, from Arsenal. Danielle van de Donk is one of the biggest football stars in the Netherlands. She has 145 caps and was a European champion in 2017 and a finalist at the World Cup in France in 2019. While playing at Arsenal, van de Donk was in a relationship with England star Beth Mead crowned best player of Euro 2022.

Together, Carpenter and van de Donk have won the league title twice, in 2022 and 2023, the 2023 Coupe de France and the 2022 Champions League.

The two fiancées received congratulations from the Lyon club, as well as those from several of their teammates, both from the club and from their respective selections. In Lyon, Wendie Renard, Eugénie Le Sommer and Griedge Mbock came forward, as did Sam Kerr (Australia) and Lieke Martens (Netherlands).
