“My village has been devastated…”: the moving appeal for a “wave of solidarity” for Mayotte by Toifilou Maoulida

by time news

The famous former Ligue 1 striker Toifilou Maoulida had been worried in the last few hours about the silence of his loved ones in Mayotte. On X he posted a message saying he had “no news” from his family. Recall that the island was shaken this weekend by a terrible cyclone called Chido, the devastation of which is still difficult to measure.

The FC Metz educator (45 years old) spoke again this Monday at midday both to thank the messages of support received but also to warn of the catastrophic humanitarian situation.

“There was very serious material damage, my village was devastated… My brother-in-law had to drive 2 hours to the capital Mamoudzou to give me news because there is no longer any network or electricity, etc. The health situation is becoming worrying. Mayotte and the Maorean people need help (donations, medicine, water, food, etc.),” the former Olympique Marseille player wrote on X.

After giving “reassuring news” from his loved ones, he listed a number of associations to which donations can be made. He mentions in particular the French Red Cross and the French Foundation.

Water begins to run low, an apocalyptic scenario around them, the fear of looting emerges… Mayotte is currently in a state of stupor. Not to mention a “very degraded” health system, with a “very damaged” hospital and “unusable” medical centers, according to the outgoing Health Minister, Geneviève Darrieussecq.
