Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military administration, issued an order to extend the period of the declared state of emergency in Myanmar for another six months. National media reported that members of the National Defense and Security Council unanimously supported the decision.

A state of emergency was declared in the country after the military seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in February last year. Senyam had earlier announced that elections would be held and the state of emergency would be withdrawn in 2023. There is concern about whether the election will be held.

The announcement to extend the state of emergency comes as the foreign ministerial meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are about to take place. ASEAN condemned the execution of four democracy activists. There are reports that Myanmar will not send a representative to the ministerial meeting.
