Myanmar marks one year of military rule – 12 arrested

by time news

The military, which seized power in neighboring Myanmar, has placed key political party leaders under house arrest.

Bangkok:

The army seized power in Myanmar on February 1 last year. As the country’s parliament convened, leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, were arrested and placed under house arrest.

Following this, the people of Myanmar took to the streets to protest. But the country’s military commander, Min Aung Haleng, justified the military rule there. This was strongly condemned by the superpower America. There the National League for Democracy, elected by the people, insisted on the formation of a government.

The military used heavy repression to retain power. It has escalated the conflict with its pro-democracy supporters, with some experts describing the country as on the brink of civil war.

About 1,500 people have been killed and 8,800 have been tortured and disappeared by security forces. More than 300,000 people have been displaced as the army demolishes villages to quell protests.

In this context, protesters staged a sit-in yesterday to protest the military takeover. They chanted against the army. Following this, the security forces arrested 12 people.
