Myanmar: US journalist Danny Fenster released – Politics abroad

by time news

After five months in horror jail, he’s finally free!

A few days after the devastating eleven-year prison sentence, the military junta in Myanmar released US journalist Danny Fenster (37). The former US diplomat Bill Richardson announced on Monday (November 15).

Fenster is the managing editor of the English-language magazine “Frontier Myanmar”. At the end of May, he was arrested at Yangon airport in Myanmar just before his flight to the USA. Since then he has been in Insein Prison, a prison notorious for its torture methods.

On Friday (November 12th) a military tribunal sentenced the journalist to 11 years in prison. The verdict covered several charges, including terrorism and rioting. Now the 37-year-old has been released surprisingly.

“Danny and the Richardson team will be making their long journey home via Qatar in the next day and a half and are looking forward to reuniting Danny with his parents Buddy and Rose and his brother Bryan in the US,” it said in an email common explanation.

Richardson has already acted as an intermediary in hostage-taking. A few days ago he met the head of the military junta, Min Aung Hlaing, in Myanmar. Window’s release was secured through a “private humanitarian visit” by Richardson to the crisis country and personal negotiations with General Min Aung Hlaing, the statement said.
