F-35 Fighter Jet Goes Missing Near Joint Base Charleston
A highly advanced F-35B Lightning II jet mysteriously disappeared near Joint Base Charleston on Sunday afternoon. The pilot managed to eject safely and is reported to be in stable condition. However, authorities are now scrambling to locate the missing aircraft.
The F-35 is renowned for its stealth capabilities, making it a prized asset for the U.S. military. However, in this case, the jet’s transponder, which helps in locating the aircraft, was not functioning properly. This unforeseen malfunction has complicated the search effort, prompting Joint Base Charleston to seek assistance from the public.
“We haven’t yet determined the reason behind the transponder’s failure, and that’s why we’ve issued a public request for help,” said Jeremy Huggins, a spokesman at Joint Base Charleston.
The appeal for information was shared on social media, urging anyone with knowledge about the aircraft’s whereabouts to come forward. While the F-35B is a Marine Corps jet, the Air Force is also involved in the search as it went down near their base. The Federal Aviation Administration has joined the response efforts as well. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35, has not provided any comments at this time.
According to Air Force protocol, any incident that results in death, injury, illness, or property damage is classified as a mishap and requires a thorough investigation. The extent of damage to the downed F-35 is currently unknown. In 2018, when the F-35 experienced its first crash, it was labeled as a “Class A” mishap due to either over $2 million in damage, complete destruction of the aircraft, or fatality/permanent total disability of the crew.
The search for the missing F-35 continues, with teams focused on the area near Lake Moultrie, a large body of water that poses challenges to the search operation due to its depth and size.
F-35 jets are not only known for their advanced features and stealth capabilities but also for their exorbitant costs. While they are considered vital next-generation aircraft for the United States and its allies, critics have raised concerns about the escalating expenses associated with the F-35 program. It remains unclear how much the lost aircraft is valued at.
