A new respiratory illness is causing concern among dog owners across the country. While no cases have been reported in Minnesota, the disease has proven to be fatal in rare instances.
The illness presents with symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, eye or nose discharge, and a lack of energy. Dr. Andrew Linklater with BluePearl emphasized the potential for transmission of the disease in homes or gatherings where dogs have been exposed to other dogs.
What makes this illness particularly worrisome is the lack of a test to diagnose it, as well as uncertainty about how it is spread. Vets are unsure whether the disease is transmitted through direct contact or through the air.
In light of this news, dog owners are urged to take precautions to keep their pets healthy. This includes ensuring that their dogs are up-to-date on all vaccines, reducing contact with large numbers of unknown dogs, and avoiding water bowls shared by several dogs.
