While the NA highly values Braži as a professional and looks “with certain expectations” to him as the future minister of foreign affairs, he will not be supported in the vote, said Dzintars.
The conversation between the parties was said to have been “constructive and respectful”, but the answers to the questions that are essential for NA, according to Dzintars, did not give enough confidence that the opposition party would be ready to “give a vote of confidence at this time” and vote for Braže’s confirmation in office. For example, in the issues of media language and national sanctions, the faction did not gain confidence that Braže could be an ally of NA in the government.
During the meeting, the opposition faction inquired whether Braže still sees himself as an independent professional who is attached to government work. The leader of the NA stated that “it did not follow from the answers that this will be the case in the future”, which means that the official will largely have to reckon with the decision of the coalition council and a joint government course, which, in the view of the NA, is often not in line with Latvia’s national and security interests.
As reported, the Saeima plans to decide on the approval of diplomat Braže as foreign minister on Friday.
After several weeks of political consultations within the JV, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) has decided to nominate diplomat Braži for the post of foreign minister.
Braže, ambassador for special tasks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has held various positions in the foreign service, including being the ambassador of Latvia to several countries. Before becoming the Ambassador for Special Tasks in the summer of 2023, she was the Deputy Secretary General of NATO for Public Diplomacy since May 2020.
Braže was unofficially mentioned as the most reliable candidate for this position immediately after the previous minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) announced his resignation. The position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs became vacant after former Prime Minister Kariņš left it after the private flight scandal.
The coalition parties have conceptually expressed their support for the candidacy of diplomat Braže for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Braže is currently non-partisan, but “Vienotība” has invited him to join the party.
