Nadal, Djokovic, Federer: twenty years of rivalry

by time news
The number of Grand Slams won, year by year since 2003, by the three ogres of world tennis.

After Rafael Nadal’s victory last January at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Spanish daily The country, in its edition of January 30, produced a comparative infographic of the Majorcan Grand Slam titles and its two main rivals for almost 20 years, the Swiss Roger Federer and the Serbian Novak Djokovic.

This victory in Australia allowed the 35-year-old Spanish left-hander, world number four in the ATP rankings, to win his twenty-first Grand Slam. A record, which put him ahead of Djokovic and Federer, both holders of 20 Grand Slams. Nadal is the only player to have won at least one Grand Slam title for ten consecutive years.

With qualifying kicking off on May 16 and the French Open tennis main draw – commonly known as “Roland-Garros” – beginning on May 22, this infographic is more relevant than ever. It makes it possible to follow the evolution of the Spanish player, since his first victory in 2005 in a Grand Slam tournament – at Roland-Garros precisely and this from his first participation – and that of the two other stars of the circuit.

This year, the oldest of them, Roger Federer, 40, will not participate in the Paris tournament but the other two are still favorites. However, they are not the only ones: all eyes have also been on Carlos Alcaraz since his victory against the German Alexander Zverev, on May 8, on the clay courts of the Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid. The performance of the 19-year-old Spanish player is all the more remarkable since, to reach the final against the world number three, he had eliminated one after the other … Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
