Paris, June 3. (time.news) – Rafael Nadal should be out for another five months after surgery on his left hip. The 22-time Grand Slam champion underwent the procedure on Friday evening at a Barcelona clinic. Nadal’s team released an update saying the arthroscopic procedure on his left psoas tendon went well, with the damaged areas cleaned and strengthened, while an old labrum tear was also addressed.

“Once again thank you for all the support you have shown me and that you show me every day. Today also for my birthday. I am not in the desired or dreamed place, but thanks anyway. As you know I had surgery last night. Everything went well and the arthroscopy was on the left psoas tendon which has kept me out of competition since January. I will immediately start progressive functional rehabilitation and the normal recovery process they tell me it is 5 months, hopefully” Rafa Nadal’s words on twitter.

The Spaniard, who turned 37 today, picked up an injury at the Australian Open in January and was only expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks. But repeated efforts to rehabilitate him haven’t worked, and last month Nadal announced he would miss the French Open for the first time since 2004. The latter schedule means Nadal is almost certainly out for the rest of the season, but could potentially make his return to Australia in January. Last month he said he predicted next year would be a farewell tour after repeated injury woes, with Nadal hoping to play in the tournaments that meant the most to him.
