Nam Yoon-soo recently became a hot topic when it was revealed to the public that he had given his father a kidney transplant. In the VCR released that day, Nam Yoon-soo appeared at a general hospital with a serious expression. It turned out that Nam Yoon-soo had come for a checkup a month after his kidney transplant surgery to check on the status of his surgery. Nam Yoon-soo confessed, “One day, I found out that my father had stage 5 end-stage renal failure.” Stage 5 end-stage renal failure is a serious condition where the kidneys have decreased to about 15% of their normal function. Nam Yoon-soo recalled, “My father’s condition was serious. When he went into hypoglycemic shock, he would lose consciousness, and on the day we were supposed to meet at the hospital for a checkup, he suddenly lost contact. I also heard that (in my father’s case) the 10-year survival rate was only 25%.” His father’s health was critical.
Nam Yoon-soo decided to get a kidney transplant surgery without hesitation despite his father’s dissuasion. Nam Yoon-soo said, “I don’t think I did anything big, I just did something that was obvious.” He continued, “My father said I couldn’t do it because my job is an actor, but I said I would do it anyway. I personally contacted and found out about all the hospitals that could do a kidney transplant and went through with it.”
All of the ‘Convenience Store Restaurant’ family members were deeply moved by Nam Yoon-soo’s utmost filial piety, saying, “He’s amazing.” The medical staff who watched him closely were also impressed. The attending physician who performed Nam Yoon-soo’s surgery said, “When (Nam Yoon-soo) was losing consciousness while being anesthetized before the surgery, his last words were, ‘Please take care of my father.’ After saying those words, he shed a single tear and the anesthesia went away. I thought he was truly a filial son. He really has a lot of fans at the hospital.”
