After the deadly knife attack in the city of Solingen, Interior Minister Nancy Feser called on German state governments to take tougher action to ensure the deportation of people who are legally required to leave the country, DPA reported.

In an interview published by the Funke media group newspapers, Feser said: “We have already created comprehensive new legal grounds for more repatriations, so that those obliged to leave the country cannot avoid deportation. The key to success is above all the new powers and provisions to be applied at the local level in the provinces as well.”

She added that the federal provinces have “every support from the government”.

The interior minister, who is from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, made the comments after the deadly knife attack in Solingen. Three people were killed and eight others were seriously injured during city celebrations on Friday night.

The suspected perpetrator – a 26-year-old Syrian who is in custody – was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria last year after his request for asylum in Germany was rejected, BTA writes.

The attack in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia sent shock waves across the country and reignited the debate over migration policy and deportations.

On Saturday, the Islamic State terrorist group said the attacker was acting on its behalf.

At the beginning of the year, the Bundestag passed tougher laws to make deportations easier. Among the changes is the extension of the maximum legal length of detention pending deportation from 10 to 28 days.
