Israfil Ashurly, who recently conquered the summit of Nanga Parbat (8125 m) in Pakistan, has climbed the seventh eight-thousander in his career.

As reported by İdman.biz, Nanga Parbat is one of the four dangerous peaks on the planet. For a long time, it topped the list of places where most climbers died. People call it the “Killer Mountain”.

For Israfil Ashurli, this was the third attempt to climb this peak in 11 years:

His first attempt in 2013 was cut short by a terrorist attack at the base camp. The attack killed 11 people, but Israfil and his companions were lucky because they were camping at an altitude of 1.5 km at the time. They were evacuated by the Pakistani army.

On his second attempt in 2023, he came close to the summit but abandoned the climb to help climbers affected by the disaster.

This year the result was better. I. Ashurly managed to reach the summit without artificial oxygen!

The peak is characterized by vertical relief, rising above the terrain in all directions. To the south of Nanga Parbat is the world’s highest mountain face, the Rupal Face, which rises 4,500 m above the base of the peak. To the north is the challenging but slightly flatter Rakiot Peak, which rises to 7,070 m.

Nanga Parbat is one of only two peaks on earth that rank among the world’s twenty highest mountains and the planet’s most prominent peaks by topographic significance, ranking ninth and fourteenth, respectively. The other such peak is Mount Everest, which ranks first on both lists. It is also the second-highest peak in the Himalayas after Mount Everest.

Since Nanga Parbat is located at the western end of the Himalayas and borders a plain characterized by a rather hot climate, the weather here is extremely unpredictable. The clash of warm and cold air masses, as well as winds and atmospheric fronts crashing against the steep walls, contribute to abrupt changes in weather and the occurrence of unexpected precipitation, which falls on the slopes in large quantities. Among the main dangers are frequent avalanches and storms, fogs and snowstorms. Because of this, climbing in winter is extremely difficult, and in other periods, changeable weather provokes numerous deaths and injuries of climbers.
