Nanoleaf Launches Smart Modular Monitor Stand with Matter over Thread Support

Nanoleaf has expanded its smart home ecosystem by unveiling the Smart Modular Monitor Stand, a desktop accessory featuring Matter over Thread connectivity. Developed in collaboration with FANTAQI, the stand combines ergonomic furniture with dual-zone smart lighting, allowing integration across Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings platforms.

The Smart Modular Monitor Stand marks a shift for Nanoleaf, moving from purely decorative wall panels into the realm of desktop furniture. By integrating Matter support via Thread, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth LE, the company is targeting a crossover between productivity-focused professionals and gamers who want their workspace lighting to sync with their digital environment.

Dual-Flux Lighting and Ergonomic Design

The stand is constructed from multi-layer solid wood with a natural walnut veneer, utilizing an 800-grit hand-sanding process to meet ENF zero-formaldehyde environmental standards. Measuring 100 x 22.5 x 12.1cm, it raises monitors by approximately 12cm to reach an optimal viewing height. Its load capacity is tiered based on configuration: it supports 28kg on its own, increasing to 70kg if the optional center support column is installed.

  • Front-facing Task Light: A CRI97 light producing up to 550 lumens with adjustable color temperatures between 1700K and 6500K.
  • Rear Ambient Light: An RGB system with 102 individually addressable LEDs delivering 480 lumens via a 160° wall-washing beam, capable of 16 million colors.

Users can control these lights via touch-sensitive sensors integrated directly into the wood veneer or through the Nanoleaf app. Advanced software features include Screen Mirror for extending display colors onto the wall and a Rhythm Music Visualiser for audio synchronization.

Modular Expansion for Content Creators

Beyond lighting, the stand functions as a mounting hub. It features 23 universal 1/4-inch threaded mounting points on the underside, allowing users to attach microphones, cameras, mobile phone holders, and other desktop accessories. This modularity is designed to help streamers and creators consolidate equipment and clear desk space.

This approach to modularity mirrors other high-end wooden stands on the market, such as the balolo Setup Cockpit, which also utilizes threaded sockets for accessories like MagSafe holders and cable organizers. However, Nanoleaf’s iteration distinguishes itself by embedding the hardware directly into the smart home fabric via the Matter protocol.

The Strategy Behind Matter over Thread

The inclusion of Thread is a strategic move toward reducing reliance on proprietary hubs. While many lighting companies use bridges to enable Matter, Nanoleaf has pushed for direct device-to-ecosystem communication. This is a philosophy CEO Gimmy Chu has championed for the company’s newer hardware.

For the monitor stand, this means the device can act as a Thread endpoint, potentially strengthening the overall mesh network of a smart home. The device also includes a Bluetooth fallback, ensuring that users without a Thread border router can still connect the stand to a phone. Firmware updates are managed via Matter OTA support through the Nanoleaf app.

Evolution of the Essentials Line

The monitor stand’s connectivity follows the precedent set by Nanoleaf’s Matter-compatible smart bulbs and light strips.

Chu previously noted that while early testing of these protocols involved a lot of hiccups, those issues have been resolved to ensure interoperability across partners. Interestingly, this Matter upgrade path is not universal across the company’s portfolio. Existing products like Nanoleaf Shapes, Elements, and Lines are not planned for Matter upgrades because they already function across major platforms.

Instead of upgrading every legacy device, Nanoleaf has positioned its signature lighting panels to act as Thread border routers. This allows them to bridge other Thread-enabled products, such as the new monitor stand, to the broader internet and wireless networks.

The current state of the ecosystem suggests a move toward a unified Thread network where routers from different manufacturers can eventually interoperate. According to Chu, while Nanoleaf and Eero routers already do this, broader platform interoperability was expected to follow.
