Of the inevitable decline: Once the highlight of the Grand Tour, today it is mainly the ruins that bear witness to the great times of Naples.

Dhe novel by Alexandre Dumas, production costs of more than five million marks, not least for the most colorful fantasy backdrops, and as the main actress Michèle Mercier, who gained some fame in the sixties through the Angélique film series – nevertheless the 1968 film “Lady Hamilton – Zwischen Disgrace and Love” failed as spectacularly as the title suggests.

But, as so often happens when something goes terribly wrong, it rarely happens without moments of unwanted hilarity. When Nadja Tiller in her role as Maria Carolina of Naples-Sicily at some point exclaims: “I’m the only person who worries in this palace!”, the German-French-Italian production does not turn out to be a good film, such nonsense but at least makes a work of art out of the clothes in the sense of Susan Sontag’s “camp aesthetic”.
