For the first time a (virtual) bridge will join the three islands of Napoleon, Corsica, Elba and Sant’Elena, to celebrate Bonaparte, on the bicentenary of his death. On 18 May the students of the Foresi high school of human sciences in Portoferraio, will meet the comrades of the Lyce Laetitia Bonaparte di Ajaccio and of Prince Andrew Secondary School of Saint Helena, together with experts to tell curiosities, stories and anecdotes about the Emperor. Giovanni Malpelo, director of the Diocesan Archive of Massa Marittima, will present the unpublished document, recently found, on the purchase by Napoleon’s sister of Villa San Martino, in exchange for diamonds.

For the first time we have managed to organize a connection between the three islands of Napoleon, Corsica where he was born, the Island of Elba where he was in exile and the Island of Sant’Elena where he spent the last moments of his life and where he died, explains Nicoletta Minelli, history teacher at the Foresi high school and responsible for the initiative. Professor Malpelo will then bring us a copy of the unpublished document, which will be officially presented, which testifies how Villa San Martino was bought by Paolina Bonaparte paying her in diamonds.

During the morning (from 9 to 13), after greetings from the principal Enzo Giorgio Fazio and the authorities, students and experts will review the life of the Emperor, from the beginning of his exile to his death, discussing the Treaty of Fontainbleau, presenting the places where he lived on Elba, Villa del Mulini, Villa di San Martino and Teatro dei Vigilanti, telling about women, loves, vegetable gardens, gardens, telegraphs, the letter on the last moments of life (with Leonello Balestrini, president of the Historiae cultural association) and even vaccinations at the time of Napoleon (with the historian and writer Isabella Zolfino). Pasquale Spina, new doctor in history and former student of human sciences, who will illustrate his thesis on the Teatro dei Vigilanti. A representative of the Petite Arme will be present.

The program will conclude with the reading of the poem Cinque Maggio by Manzoni. Our aim is to make different realities that share a piece of history dialogue, making the thread that connects us in the name of Napoleon something tangible. Behind this event there is a lot of teaching and research: we try to bring the children closer to history by making them enter into history, says the principal Fazio.
