Kyiv: The United Nations Secretary-General has high hopes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ukraine. The UN Chief hopes that Modi’s visit will prove helpful in ending the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. UN Chief’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said this on Thursday in response to a question on Modi’s visit to Ukraine. He said, ‘We have seen many heads of state and government visiting this region. We hope that all these visits will bring us closer and this conflict will end in accordance with UN resolutions, international law and territorial integrity.’ The General Assembly has demanded to stop Russian aggression in at least three resolutions and to stop attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure in a separate resolution.
According to NDTV report, Narendra Modi is reaching Ukraine on Friday, where he is to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky. His visit is taking place about one and a half months after his visit to Russia. In Russia too, he discussed the situation in Ukraine with President Vladimir Putin. It is expected that he will also discuss the issue of war with Zelensky. This visit of Narendra Modi is also important because since the attack by Russia, no leader of any country other than NATO countries has visited Ukraine.

India is insisting on a solution through dialogue

India has stressed on resolving the Russia-Ukraine issue through dialogue. In a joint statement issued by India-Russia after Narendra Modi’s Moscow visit, it was said that both the leaders have stressed on the necessity of a peaceful resolution of the conflict around Ukraine through dialogue and diplomacy. However, India has distanced itself from the resolution condemning Russia’s aggression in the United Nations and has shown neutrality.

Prime Minister Modi and President Zelensky have spoken on the phone several times since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. In March this year, Modi had said in a post on X that he conveyed India’s continued support to all efforts for peace and an early end to the ongoing conflict. India will continue to provide humanitarian assistance guided by our people-centric approach.
