Did you know that in 1768 the first competitions that can be called a biathlon took place between border guards on the border between Sweden and Norway? In 1924, “military patrol competitions” were included in the program of the First Winter Olympics in Chamonix as a demonstration sport. Narva biathlon began its history in 1979. During this period, many participants of the Narva biathlon division became members of the Estonian Junior and Youth National Teams and competed at the World Championships among adults , juniors and young men in biathlon.

A meeting was held in Hotel Europa with the founder of the Narva Biathlon, its current management, coaches and athletes. We discussed new projects, results obtained, development prospects and much more.

Game Narva biathlon. Change of generations.

For the first time, the Narva team participated in the biathlon championship in 1973 in Otepää on the initiative of Rafik Azizbayev. Narvians Nikolai Smirnov and Igor Gorshenin played with him there. In 1975, Evgeniy Vshivtsev came to Narva and a year later the Narva team took part in the Estonian cross-country skiing championship in Otepää, where the training camp was held. Nikolai Smirnov then proposed to try his hand at biathlon, using a 6.5 mm caliber combat rifle with a shooting range of 150 meters. At that time, athletes shot without comfortable rubber mats, as they do now, but, regardless of the weather, located directly on the ground. And in the period until 1979, Narvians Rafik Azizbaev and Evgeniy Voloshin were members of the national team and repeatedly became champions and winners of the Estonian championship. In addition to them, Evgeny Vshivtsev and Oleg Gornistov received the title “Master of Sports of the USSR”.

These years were very fruitful for our biathletes: thanks to Oleg Gornistov, Evgeniy Voloshin, Rafik Azizbaev, Narva impressively won the relay race at Spartakiad ESSR, which was held every four years.

In 1979, a biathlon department was opened at the Krenholm Youth Sports School;

“E. Voloshin and I went to the capital to get these rifles for training,” recalls Evgeny Vshivtsev. — But we could not immediately find a place to receive them, so we had to spend the night at the station.

At different times, Evgeniy Vshivtsev, Nikolai Smirnov, Vladimir Vshivtsev, Einar Veeremäe, and Evgeniy Voloshin worked as trainers at the Youth Sports School. The training was held in an indoor shooting range at the Krenholm stadium, and during this period many of our boys became Estonian winners in different age groups. At that time, they were allowed to compete at the age of 11 and I would like to list them all for their high results: these are Alexander Gorlovich, Atatoly Stykaylo, Anatoly Stepchenko, Vasily Evremov, Einar Veeremäe, Andres Moses, Igor Vasiliev. , Victor Shemarin, Vladimir Nartov, Sergey Blokhin, Mikhail Gorlovich , the first girl in biathlon Narva Yulia Chaikina, Svetlana Vinogradova and others The competitions were held in various biathlon centers of the USSR: Leningrad, Sverdlovsk, Perm, Tchaikovsky, Krasnoufimsk, Kirovo -Chepetsk, Murmansk. For the first snow we went to the Arctic, the village of Polyarnye Zori.

It is important to note that there was another group of biathletes in the 1980s: a branch of the Tallinn Dynamo school with coach Rafik Azizbaev. Of course, they also had their legendary athletes: Eduard Minchenkov, Yuri Tolmachev, Alexander Vlasov.

All this time, the biathletes from the Krenholm Youth Sports School were based at the Krenholm stadium and until 1989, they built a new shooting range in the Riigiküla area, where the Estonian summer biathlon championships were held. Unfortunately, the expansion of the cemetery did not allow it to be exploited further.

It’s 1992. “Krenholm” closes and Narva biathletes move to the city school “Energia” and until 2007, work is underway to refit the shooting range on Lipovka into a biathlon shooting range. Five mechanical installations were installed, a 2,200-meter ski track was extended and equipped, which was rolled by Buran’s snowmobile. The shooting range was open, with special shields to catch bullets, and then they shot from biathlon rifles at 50 meters.

With the beginning of 2007, the development of Orekhovo Gorka begins in August. They used their strengths: they worked as a small team consisting of Vladimir Vshivtsev, Mikhail Gorlovich, Viktor Shemarin, Evgeniy Vshivtsev, and a year later they moved to the basement of Orekhovaya Gorka, and the armory was moved to the SSh Energia building. a swimming pool.

Separately, I would like to note that Narva biathletes had serious achievements during this period of perestroika and resettlement:

1990 Evgenia Polyakova won the USSR Junior Cup in Murmansk and is included in the USSR junior team (coach Alexander Nesterovich), and a year later, as part of the junior team, she won the European Genius Cup – 3rd place (sprint) and 1st. place (relay). A year later, in 1992, Elena, as part of the same junior team at the World Championships in Canada, took 4th place! In the same year, Polyakova participated in the Olympic Games in Altberville (France) and this was the first participation of women in O/I biathlon.

1993 comes and the adult Estonian team participates in the World Championships, from which they return with awards: from Bulgaria (Borovets) with 14th place in the sprint and from the World Cup stage (Lillehamer – Norway) with the 5th place in the sprint.

Many young athletes from Narva became champions and winners of the Estonian championship, performing as part of the national team, at the World Youth Championships and the Youth Olympic Festivals. For example, in 1996, Natalia Polyakova took 5th place (sprint) at the Sundeval Olympic Festival (Sweden). Yuri Borisov returns in 1999 from the Olympic Festival in Slovenia with 14th place (sprint). In 2005, Yuri Vshivtsev took 21st place (distance) from the World Junior Championships from Finland.

Repeated winners of the competition in these years were Vladimir Vshivtsev, Alexander Bulavkin, Natalya Polyakova, including taking part in Poland in the fight for the Baltic Cup.

The names of our boys – Alexey Voloshin, Daniil Stepchenko, Anton Isachenkov, Alena Platonova, Sergey Platonov, Yulia Melikidze, Artem Vinogradov, Yana Minchenkova, Christian and Marko Koskinen, Daria Yurlova – are firmly embedded in the history of the achievements of the Narva biathlon. It is important to note the special results of our athletes:

2005 World Junior Championships Milan (Italy). 17th place *sprint for Daniil Stepchenko and 19th place (sprint) for Yana Minchenkova.

2006 Summer Junior World Championships Otepää (Estonia): Daniil Stepchenko takes 1st place (sprint)

2012 World Junior Championships in Finland: Daria Yurlova returns with 4th place (relay).

2012 Daniil Stepchenko and Daria Yurlova are included in the main squad of the Estonian national team.

2013 Junior World Championships Obertilan (Austria): Daria Yurlova gets 10th place (sprint) and 6th place (trail).

2014 Narva biathletes perform at the Olympic Games in Sochi (Russia)

The history of the development of Nara biathlon is interesting and rich in events and results. Today, a new generation of children who are passionate about this sport are growing up. Excellent infrastructure supports new development plans, including the construction of a facility for visitors and athletes at Orekhovaya Gorka, which is possible thanks to the attraction of European funds. Sports camps for children are held during the winter and summer holidays.

When to come to biathlon?

Biathlon is a really exciting sport, because until the last minute it is not clear who will win and it does not tolerate monotonous work. There is a variety of all kinds of sports, different training. This includes shooting, swimming, skiing, team sports, and cycling. All this is included in the training process.

Usually, they start with ski school and then move on to biathlon. This is due to the fact that children have not yet developed a sufficiently strong spine, their muscles are still weak. Ski racing is the main stage where you need to start developing, mastering the basics and working on your technique. After this, improvement occurs. You can start skiing from the age of 7. At this stage, children master skiing skills, develop coordination, become physically stronger, and then move on to biathlon.

Of course, the coach and parents play a key role in this process. When a child enjoys playing sports, he is happy to go to training, enjoy the sports atmosphere and make new friends. Characteristics such as leadership qualities, ambition and determination begin to come together within the framework of sport from childhood, encouraging the desire to challenge oneself, to be the first, and to withstand difficulties. There is a significant difference between children involved in sports and their peers, first of all, in their attitude and sense of responsibility. This is most obvious between 14 and 16 years of age. It is at this age that the training becomes conscious, when the guys themselves monitor the daily routine, when they come not only to “hang out” with each other, but to actually train.

“It is very valuable that our boys now come to encourage and support each other at competitions, even if they are not competing themselves,” he notes. Vladimir Vshivtsev. – A certain team spirit distinguishes them, they stick together, it’s very cool! I would like to note the active role of the parents: they are always in touch and ready to help. That is how it happened that Äkke founded an association of judges who help on a voluntary basis, including parents.

Our boys can continue their sports education at Audentes, a good starting point. This is not just a school, but a renowned educational and sports center that offers quality education and a variety of development and sports opportunities in today’s developing world. On December 8, 2018, the Ministry of Education and Science signed a new public procurement agreement with the Audentes Schools Foundation, which ensures the implementation of the national order for training at the Audentes Sports Gym in the period 2020-2035. The purpose of the agreement is to create a development environment for talented and athletic high school students in order to comprehensively prepare them for general education and the development of sports skills and knowledge.
