Speaking to reporters in Mumbai on Friday, Nelson congratulated India for being the first country to land a spacecraft around the south pole of the moon.

He also highlighted the NISAR mission, a joint Earth-observing mission between NASA and ISRO. Nelson emphasized the importance of the mission, stating that it will help researchers understand the changes in Earth’s forest and wetland ecosystems, and their impact on the global carbon cycle.

Additionally, Nelson announced that NASA is planning a return to the moon with international partners, including an international crew on the first mission with astronauts. He also expressed the potential for expanded commercial investment from India in space exploration.

During his visit to India, Nelson toured the UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, where the NISAR satellite is undergoing testing before its scheduled launch in 2024. He also interacted with students of Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological Museum in Bengaluru.

India’s achievements in space exploration have garnered praise from NASA, with Nelson commending the country for its significant contributions in advancing our understanding of Earth and outer space.
