NASA has canceled its commercial rescue mission to save the aging Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, dooming the space telescope to plunge through Earth’s atmosphere and burn up later this year. The $30 million venture with aerospace start-up Katalyst Space Technologies failed due to an uncontrolled spin and attitude control issues.

The effort to salvage the orbiting observatory came to an official halt after persistent steering and positioning failures crippled the rescue spacecraft. Launched on July 3, the unmanned LINK spacecraft rocketed away from Kwajalein Atoll aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL flight, aiming to rendezvous with Swift and boost it back to a safe altitude.

Instead, the high-risk, high-reward mission ran into severe mechanical trouble just weeks after liftoff. Flight controllers managed to slow down the tumbling vehicle, but issues continued to plague its pointing and orientation in orbit, forcing mission managers to abandon the capture plan entirely.

What Went Wrong With the LINK Spacecraft in Orbit

Shortly after achieving orbit, the rescue craft experienced mechanical setbacks that derailed the timeline. LINK experienced attitude control issues, which caused it to spin and resulted in sporadic communications.

Flight controllers managed to slow Link’s tumble, but they couldn’t restore it to an optimal position.

Despite recovering partial control, the ongoing attitude malfunctions proved too severe for the delicate proximity operations required to latch onto the telescope. NASA and Katalyst concluded that the risk of a botched physical connection was too high.

A First-of-Its-Kind Commercial Attempt Built on an Aggressive Schedule

The endeavor marked an unprecedented experiment in commercial space servicing. NASA awarded the contract to Arizona-based Katalyst Space Technologies in September 2025, tasking the start-up with designing, building, and launching the rescue vehicle in less than a year.

The mission carried a modest price tag of $30 million, funded by NASA to test whether private vendors could keep legacy government hardware alive at a fraction of traditional costs.

The urgency was driven entirely by solar weather. Intense solar activity heated Earth’s upper atmosphere, increasing drag and causing Swift’s orbit to decay much faster than anticipated. To slow that descent, operators had already turned off the telescope’s science instruments earlier this year.

Launched in 2004, Swift was originally designed for a two-year prime mission to study gamma-ray bursts, which are among the most powerful explosions in the universe.

The observatory earned its reputation as a cosmic workhorse by spinning rapidly toward distant explosions to capture fading afterglows. Its discoveries included detecting GRB 090423, the most distant known confirmed object in the universe, and capturing footage of a black hole tearing apart a star 750 million light-years away.

Operating for more than 20 years, Swift leaves behind a rich archive of high-energy astrophysics data. Without an orbital boost, the telescope is expected to make an uncontrolled reentry into the atmosphere no earlier than October.

Next Steps for LINK and the Uncertainty Facing Hubble

Though the rescue is off, the mission is not entirely finished. Katalyst will continue operating the LINK spacecraft in close proximity to the telescope to test rendezvous algorithms and gather operational data.

Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee noted that the company learned a tremendous amount that will directly shape its next-generation servicing architecture.

NASA’s 36-year-old Hubble Space Telescope is also dropping in altitude due to recent solar outbursts and had been next in line for a commercial rescue attempt.
