The arriving trio joins a crowded station already housing NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, along with European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, Sergei Mikaev, and Andrei Fedyaev. Manturov’s office reported that discussions during the visit covered prospective cooperation on the space station as well as other joint undertakings.

Even as crews continue to fly together on alternating spacecraft, the broader framework of space diplomacy is fracturing. Hopes to operate under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty for the benefit of all humankind have encountered serious friction. Denis Kravchenko, deputy chair of the State Duma’s committee on economic policy, noted via The Christian Science Monitor that he had repeatedly met with leaders of the Chinese space industry and wanted to state that their cooperation definitely had a future, adding that nuclear technologies in space were of crucial importance there as they would become the basis for long-range missions and future space energy.

Shifting Alliances and the Limits of Solo Exploration

The strain on international partnerships highlights a growing realization among spacefaring nations that financial and technological hurdles in deep-space exploration are too high for any single government to shoulder independently. Analysts note that mistrust between Washington and Moscow has reached levels where future agreements will likely mirror earthly geopolitical divides rather than transcend them.

Andrei Ionin, Russian space expert, stated via The Christian Science Monitor that people needed to realize that no country could manage, technologically or financially, to explore deep space on its own, noting that no single country had national tasks on the moon or Mars that could justify the costs involved and that the only way was to unite the efforts of leading countries to realize common purposes, observing further that it should be easier to reach agreement in space than on Earth.

Beyond lunar exploration, Moscow and Beijing have agreed to integrate their satellite navigation systems to counter the U.S.-owned GPS network, while Russia faces mounting disadvantages in high-speed orbital internet connectivity such as Starlink, which has demonstrated vital military and communications applications in Ukraine. As the space station approaches its eventual retirement, the enduring model of shared orbital operations faces a definitive test against rapidly hardening terrestrial boundaries.
