The first ultra-high definition video streamed from space, sent to Earth from a distance of 31 million kilometers
Taters the cat plays on the sofa chasing the red light of a laser pointer. It is the laser communication test conducted by NASA on board the Psyche mission launched in October and headed towards an asteroid. The goal is to demonstrate the possibility of transmitting large amounts of data from space at speeds up to 100 times faster than the radio frequency systems used today in view of missions to Mars. The video, which also contains data on the cat’s colour, breed and heart rate, lasts 15 seconds. It was loaded before launch and was sent at a rate of 267 megabits per second from the laser transceiver on board Psyche. The signal took 101 seconds to reach Earth. Choosing a Cat is a quote from Felix The Cat, whose figurine was used as a test image for the first television broadcasts in the United States in 1928.
