Francisco Martín, the Madrid government delegate, described the situation as “crítica,” emphasizing the urgency of protecting the MDSCC. We are doing everything possible to shield this installation, which is vital and currently in a dangerous position, he said, according to Spanish media. The facility, operated by Spain’s INTA and NASA, is part of a trio of DSN sites in Spain, California, and Australia, enabling continuous communication with spacecraft like Voyager 1 and the James Webb Space Telescope.

Operations Shifted to Goldstone as Damage Assessments Delayed

NASA confirmed the evacuation of all personnel but cautioned that damage assessments would wait for safer conditions. Any potential damage will be assessed when it is safe to do so, a spokesperson said, per Wired. The agency has shifted operations to the Goldstone complex in California, ensuring uninterrupted support for missions like Artemis, though the Madrid site’s absence complicates deep-space tracking.

Spain’s Cebreros tracking station, part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Estrack network, was also evacuated due to the wildfires, according to Spanish news reports. Located a few miles from NASA’s DSN facility, the station’s evacuation underscored the widespread impact of the blazes on space operations. Reuters reported that Spanish authorities ordered more than 19,000 people to evacuate from towns in the mountains west of Madrid.

Employees Safe, but Facilities Remain Unchecked

During the evacuation, 90 workers were desalojados (displaced) from the MDSCC in several batches, according to Lola Cadierno, NASA’s assistant executive at the center. All the employees evacuated are safe, but authorities have not confirmed whether the flames reached the facilities because there is no staff inside, she said, per RTVE. The complex, officially named the Complejo de Comunicaciones del Espacio Profundo de Madrid, is situated on the road connecting Colmenar del Arroyo and Robledo de Chavela, a location now at risk from the fire’s northward movement.
