NASA’s Perseverance rover has recorded Earth disappearing behind the Martian moon Phobos from 195 million miles away, capturing an occultation event in the evening sky of Mars that astronomers say took planning and a little luck to document from the surface of another planet.

A Martian Occultation Observed by Perseverance

The observation took place at about 7 p.m. local solar time on July 2, marking the 1,907th Martian day of the mission. Operating along the rim of Mars’ Jezero Crater, the rover used its Mastcam-Z instrument to record a sequence showing Earth as a tiny point of light while the potato-shaped moon Phobos crossed the evening sky in the opposite direction. By the third image in the frame, the two objects lined up, causing Earth to vanish temporarily behind the shadowed edge of the moon.

Astronomers categorize this celestial alignment as an occultation, which occurs when an object that appears larger from the viewer’s perspective completely blocks a more distant object behind it. Phobos measures about 17 miles across at its widest point and orbits 4,850 miles from Mars, making it appear about one-third as wide as Earth’s Moon appears from our planet. At the time of the capture, Earth was about 195 million miles away, appearing as a single-pixel-sized point of light.

Active Surface Explorers and Deep Space Missions

The occultation stands out among a busy operational schedule for NASA’s robotic fleet on the Red Planet. Perseverance captured a selfie constructed from 61 individual images during its deepest push west beyond Jezero Crater. Having launched in 2020 and landed in February 2021 following a 300-million-mile journey, the rover continues searching for signs of ancient microbial life within the ancient crater, which is believed to have formed 3.9 billion years ago from a massive impact and once held water.

East of Perseverance, the Curiosity rover is climbing the 3-mile-high Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater. Having landed in August 2012, Curiosity has collected 42 powderized rock samples using the drill on its robotic arm to uncover organic compounds and determine if the environment was once hospitable to life.

From Satellite Processing to Discovering Ancient Rock Art on Earth

While Martian orbiters and rovers gather geological data to prepare for crewed landings, algorithms originally built to analyze space imagery have found unexpected utility back on Earth. In 2005, archaeologist Jon Harman attended a rock art conference and viewed Martian surface photographs enhanced by a technique called decorrelation stretch. First developed by researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1978 and refined in 1996 to improve the interpretation of high-correlation remote sensing and satellite imagery, the process maps original colors to a different, expanded range of colors while preserving the relative sense of the hue, saturation, and intensity of the input image.

Recognizing the potential for uncovering faded pigments, Harman used a NASA research paper to develop the Dstretch software plug-in. Applying the tool to photographs from Baja California, Mexico, the algorithm rescued a yellow figure from the rock face that was otherwise invisible to the naked eye. The software has since been adopted by researchers worldwide to identify undocumented archaeological finds.

Global Archaeological Applications and Future Exploration

The adaptation of NASA’s planetary image processing has reshaped archaeological surveys across multiple continents. Archaeologists used the tool to identify depictions of bats and pigs at the Beni Hassan cemetery in Egypt and uncovered a pictograph of a horse and rider at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada, believed to serve as a calling card from a Crow warrior. In Cambodia, Singaporean archaeologist Noel Hidalgo Tan deployed the plug-in between 2010 and 2012 to discover more than 200 faded paintings around the Angkor Wat temple complex.
