NASA Successfully Delivers Sample of Asteroid Bennu to Earth
NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has accomplished an incredible feat by safely delivering a capsule the size of a car tire containing a sample of the intriguing and potentially hazardous asteroid Bennu. The capsule was flung onto a bombing range in Utah on Sunday.
After being released by the spacecraft four hours earlier, the capsule parachuted onto the muddy Utah Test and Training Range. To ensure it would not end up in Utah, the parent spacecraft fired thrusters to redirect its path towards another target – the asteroid Apophis. NASA has scheduled a crucial encounter with Apophis for 2029.
