A NASCAR Cup Series champion is aiming to secure another win at the iconic Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, with eyes already set on the 2025 title.
Concord, N.C. – Ryan Blaney, driving the No. 12 car, is balancing preparation for Sunday’s race at Charlotte’s ROVAL with the momentum of already securing a place in the NASCAR playoffs’ Round of 8. The 2023 Cup Series champion demonstrated his championship form during a fan meet-and-greet on Friday afternoon, but remains focused on the immediate challenge.
Securing a Playoff Berth
Blaney clinched his spot in the Round of 8 with a victory at New Hampshire on September 21. This early advancement provides a psychological advantage as the ROVAL serves as the final race before the next stage of the playoffs. “With the ROVAL being the final race before the Round of 8, already having advanced puts my mind a bit more at ease,” Blaney stated. However, he emphasized that this comfort will not translate to a diminished effort on the track.
Maintaining a Competitive Edge
Despite his secured position, Blaney insists his approach will remain unchanged. “As far as competitive mindset, nothing changes,” he affirmed. “We’re trying to win the race as normal and be aggressive.” He described the importance of maintaining a race-winning mentality, avoiding complacency even after recent success. “You kind of just want to keep that mentality of being in race-winning mode. Like, you don’t kick your feet up for a couple weeks just because we won New Hampshire… But in the back of your mind, it’s just a little bit less worry.”
ROVAL Expertise and Championship Aspirations
The ROVAL, Charlotte’s challenging 17-turn road course, has historically been a strong track for Blaney. He secured a win there in 2018 and boasts five top-10 finishes in seven starts. Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Blaney is considered a frontrunner for the Cup Series title.
“I think we’re in a great spot to just try to have another shot at it,” Blaney said, referencing a potential second Cup championship. He acknowledged the ultimate goal: “All you can ask for is just to give yourself another chance at Phoenix and can you perform on that day.”
Round of 8 Challenges Ahead
The Round of 8 will consist of races at Las Vegas, Talladega, and Martinsville. Notably, Blaney has previously won at both Talladega and Martinsville, providing him with a strategic advantage. He approaches each race with unwavering confidence. “I kind of go in with the mindset each and every week, no matter what track it is, that we can have a shot to win,” he explained.
A Hometown Race with Special Meaning
Winning at Charlotte holds particular significance for Blaney, given its proximity to his hometown of High Point, North Carolina, and the track’s role in his childhood memories of watching his father race. “Everyone wants to win on their home turf,” he said. “I have a lot of fond memories of this place… It would be special to try to win another race here.”
Blaney and his fellow competitors will begin the race at Charlotte at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 5.
