Work From Anywhere Policy to Ease Eid Travel Congestion in Indonesia

Indonesia is considering re-implementing a work from anywhere (WFA) policy to mitigate traffic congestion during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday, building on its success during the 2025 Christmas and New Year (Nataru) period. The initiative aims to proactively manage travel flows and enhance road safety.

A senior Indonesian law enforcement official stated that the WFA policy proved effective in reducing traffic density during the Nataru holidays. This success has prompted discussions with the Minister of Transportation to explore extending the policy for Eid, a period known for massive domestic travel as Indonesians return to their hometowns.

Operation Ketupat and WFA Implementation

Detailed planning for the WFA policy’s implementation will occur during “Operation Ketupat,” the annual coordinated effort to manage Eid travel. According to the official, authorities will determine specific dates for the WFA initiative to maximize its impact. “We have spoken with the Minister of Transportation, later during Operation Ketupat we will also think about what days work from anywhere will be carried out,” the official explained after monitoring traffic flow in Sentul, Bogor, West Java, on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

The strategy centers on strategically dispersing the peak travel demand by allowing employees to work remotely. “Work from anywhere is actually a study of how we can break down the homebound and return flows. And we can predict when it breaks down for a long time, the traffic counting on the road will be more controllable,” the official added. This proactive approach allows for more controlled traffic management and improved predictability.

Enhanced Road Safety Measures

Alongside the WFA policy, authorities are reinforcing existing safety regulations, including a Joint Decree (SKB) restricting the operation of three-axle trucks. This measure has already demonstrated positive results in reducing traffic accidents.

“This also includes restrictions on three axles. This is very important because safety and smoothness are the most important thing. We ensure that the vehicle is safe, the road is safe, including the driver is safe,” the official emphasized. The continued enforcement of this SKB during Eid is expected to further enhance road safety.

A Holistic Approach to Holiday Travel

The combined strategy of WFA and truck restrictions represents a holistic approach to managing the complexities of holiday travel in Indonesia. The official underscored that these measures are integral to the overall readiness for both Nataru and Eid operations.

“This is part of the dynamics of the homecoming and return flows both for Nataru and also the readiness for the Eid operation,” the official concluded, highlighting the ongoing commitment to ensuring safe and efficient travel for all Indonesians.
