The President of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, rejects this Wednesday the rumors of a dissolution project just after the presidential election of April 10 and 24. This idea is lent to the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in the event of re-election. For the boss of the deputies, the legislative calendar “is intended to be held, except in special circumstances”.

These rumours, relayed by several media, are based on the fact that the long delay of seven weeks between the second round of the presidential election and the legislative elections, scheduled for June 12 and 19, could complicate the management of the period for the outgoing majority in the event of the re-election of Emmanuel Macron.

The answer of the president candidate to a question on this scenario during his press conference presenting his program last week did not extinguish the questions. These dates “have been fixed, they are passed in the Council of Ministers”, he replied, “and once again, what matters to me are the presidential elections. I have too much respect for democratic appointments to rush them or give the feeling, in some way, of playing with them,” he added.

“Will there be special circumstances? »

Questioned this Wednesday on France Inter, Richard Ferrand pointed out that a dissolution of the National Assembly was “a prerogative of the President of the Republic” and that “today we have a calendar, there is no reason why we do not hold it”. “Will there be special or other circumstances that would justify this decision by the President of the Republic? As I speak to you, no,” he added.

The president of the majority group LREM (La République En Marche) in the Assembly, Christophe Castaner, said on Monday on BFMTV and RMC that a dissolution “does not (his) day (should) irrelevant” and was “in the realm of rumour”.

The last dissolution in France dates back to 1997. President Jacques Chirac, from the RPR, which has since become Les Républicains, had been elected two years earlier. He had not obtained a parliamentary majority in the wake of this political gesture and had governed with the left opposition led by Lionel Jospin for five years.
