Film Adaptation: A Captivating Round Table Discussion
Initiated under the theme “Film adaptation of literary works,” a captivating round table discussion took place at the historic “Borj Dar El Baroud” space. The gathering brought together filmmakers, writers, actors, and literature and 7th art enthusiasts to explore the multifaceted creative process of adapting literary works for the big screen.
The moderator, Sanae Ghouati, member of the Commission for Aid to the Production of Cinematographic Works under the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM), opened the debate by emphasizing the importance of fostering collaboration between writers and filmmakers. She highlighted the potential of film adaptation to reach a wider audience with the exceptional narrative potential of literary works.
Director Abdelkader Lagtâa shared his experience adapting literary works into films. He stressed the potential of collaboration between Moroccan filmmakers, novelists, and short story writers to enrich national film production. He also acknowledged the unique challenges and opportunities inherent in the adaptation process.
Film critic Hammadi Gueroum emphasized the need for creative interpretation in adaptation, arguing that it should go beyond a literal translation of the literary work to the silver screen. He also highlighted the potential for cinematic innovation through literary adaptation.
University professor Abdelkrim Oubella emphasized the importance of cultivating a passion for reading as a foundation for successful adaptation. He argued that filmmakers must maintain a constant curiosity towards literature to find inspiration.
Writer Souad Jamai shared her personal perspective on the transition from literary work to cinematographic work, describing the process as a collaborative journey.
Journalist and writer Fouad Souiba observed that adaptation is a dialogue between the original text and its visual interpretation, highlighting successful adaptations worldwide. He encouraged Moroccan filmmakers to focus on national literary works.
The round table discussion provided a platform for exploring the artistic, technical, and commercial challenges faced by filmmakers and writers when adapting literary works for the big screen. The event, under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, is part of the ongoing 23rd edition of the FNF festival, which promises a diverse selection of films and cinematic discussions until November 4th.
