Authorities are searching for Fidel Llanos Cruz, a 34-year-old National Guard veteran, who disappeared while trying to rescue a 20-year-old tourist in Ventana del Mar, Condado. The dramatic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon behind the La Concha hotel, when the young tourist, Charles Victor Daniel Poor, a resident of Illinois, was swept away by ocean currents.

Llanos Cruz, a National Guard veteran, was at the scene with his 11- and 12-year-old children. According to the minors, his father, upon realizing the tourist’s critical situation, did not hesitate to act. Bravely, he took off a chain he was carrying, took charge and jumped into the sea in a desperate attempt to save Poor’s life.

Despite the efforts of the National Guard veteran, the young tourist was rescued alive but unfortunately died later in the hospital. The quick intervention of Llanos Cruz managed to get Poor out of the water in time, however, the consequences of the incident were irreversible.
