Under the precept Towards a new press model, with the light of a paradigm, the First Juan Antonio Borrego In Memoriam National Journalism Colloquium will be held on October 3, convened by the honorary chair that bears the name of the notable Cuban journalist, assigned to the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Sancti Spíritus José Martí Pérez (UNISS); the newspaper Escambray and the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) in this province.

The event, considered a pre-event of the VII International Scientific Conference Yayabociencia 2023, will become a platform to delve into the legacy of someone who is described by the national presidency of the UPEC as a paradigm of leader within the journalistic union in Cuba; as well as to discuss good practices in professional practice and the urgent transformation that the public press model in the country needs, says the call, socialized by the presidency of the honorary chair.

On April 19, 2005, on behalf of the Escambray collective, Borrego received the replica of the mambí machete of Generalísimo Máximo Gómez, from the Commander of the Revolution Juan Almeida Bosque.

The academic agenda of the meeting includes conferences, focused on two dimensions of Borrego’s professional performance: his status as a leader (he directed the destinies of Escambray for almost 24 years) and his tenure as a correspondent for the newspaper Granma en Sancti Spíritus during almost three decades.

A panel, led by the presidency of the UPEC in the country, entitled Experiments in the press in the context of the transformation of Social Communication in Cuba, is also part of the colloquium program, where they will also announce: the results of the Quijote National Investigative Journalism Award of Cuba.

The conclave will take place in the context of the actions for the 40th anniversary of the founding of UNISS, the 45th anniversary of the creation of the newspaper Escambray Two years since the physical disappearance on October 4, 2021 of Borrego Díaz.

This first edition of the colloquium will be held at the Rubén Martínez Villena Provincial Library, which will arrive next December, six decades after it emerged in the former El Progreso Society.

The VII International Scientific Conference Yayabociencia 2023 will take place from October 11 to 14 in Trinidad, a World Cultural Heritage City and will be an opportunity to learn and discuss good practices and challenges, as well as to project forms of international cooperation between institutions, entities, organizations and universities, so as to qualitatively raise the level of Higher Education.
