On the 24th, the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee of the National Assembly, led by the opposition party, issued an accompanying order to Kim Tae-young, CEO of 21 Gram, who failed to appear at the government inspection. 21 Gram is a company that sponsored and cooperated with Cobana Contents, an exhibition planning company run by President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife, Kim Kun-hee, and is suspected of receiving ‘preferential orders’ by winning the Yongsan Presidential Residence expansion project through a private contract.
On this day, the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Commission issued an accompanying order to three people, including Representative Kim, who were selected as witnesses for the National Assembly inspection but did not appear. The recipients of the issuance are CEO Kim, Lee Jae-seon, CEO of Wontop General Construction, and Jeon Hae-gap, CEO of Ahwon Gotaek, who are suspected of preferential treatment in the contract process for the expansion of the presidential office residence.
Democratic Party lawmaker Moon Jin-seok, a member of the opposition party, asked Chairman Maeng Seong-gyu of the same party to suspend the morning inspection of government affairs and allow lawmakers to visit Representative Kim and others in person to execute the accompanying order. Rep. Moon said, “It is not right for only the employees of the administrative office to go when there is an order to accompany them. He argued, “Members who can go should go together.”
In response, the ruling party countered that it was correct for officials from the National Assembly Secretariat to execute the accompanying order after waiting until the time when witnesses were scheduled to appear in accordance with the National Assembly Act. Rep. Kwon Young-jin of the People Power Party, a member of the ruling party, protested, saying, “We don’t yet know whether witnesses will come forward or not, so there is no reason to issue an accompanying order by delaying precious National Assembly inspection time.”
As the ruling and opposition parties exchanged shouts, Chairman Maeng declared an adjournment one hour after the start of the National Assembly inspection, held a meeting, and passed an order to accompany the National Assembly. The ruling party lawmakers protested against this and left before the decision was passed. To enforce the accompanying order, the National Assembly inspection of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport was suspended until 2 p.m. that day.
