The price of walnut cookies, a popular snack sold at highway rest areas, was found to differ by up to two times depending on the rest area.

According to data submitted by the Korea Expressway Corporation to Rep. Yeom Tae-young of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, on the 16th, the price of walnut cookies at 208 highway rest areas across the country varied from about 13.8 won to 29.4 won per gram. Even when purchasing the same amount of walnut cookies, the price difference can be as much as 2.12 times depending on the rest area.

For example, even if you purchase 3,000 won worth of walnut cookies, the weight varies from 140g to 210g and the number varies from 6 to 10 depending on the rest stop.

As for the ingredients of walnut cookies, only two rest areas use domestic walnuts and red beans, namely Cheonan Samgeori (Seoul) and Cheonan Walnut (Busan), and only 13 and 2 rest areas use domestic wheat flour and rice flour, respectively. In addition, only one rest area uses pine nuts.

Rep. Yeom Tae-young pointed out, “Walnut cookies are recognized as a national snack, but most of the ingredients are imported and the price difference is very large.” He added, “There is a need to closely examine whether this price difference is reasonably set.”

Meanwhile, the most sold snack at highway rest areas during this year’s Lunar New Year holiday was walnut cookies, which sold a total of 1.84 billion won worth, taking first place in sales. The total sales were 379,834, and the second place in sales was Americano (1.63 billion won), followed by Udon (1.56 billion won), finished coffee beverages (1.36 billion won), and Ramen (1.28 billion won).
