The exhibition of the Nativity of the sixteenth century masters in Lecco

Lecco, Palace of Fears, from December 5th on stage “The Nativity”By the Lombard Andrea Previtali,“ the Adoration of the Magi ”, attributed to Jacopo Bassano, and“ the Adoration of the shepherds ”by Giovanni Battista Moroni. Three paintings illustrated with the oil on canvas technique that reproduce the Holy Conversation and the Nativity. The three works have the merit of highlighting the dialogue between the two parents, Joseph and Mary, who celebrate the birth of the son of God who became man. The three masterpieces are exhibited in three different rooms, able to accommodate all visitors in compliance with anti-Covid regulations.

The work of Jacopo Bassano it was restored in 2014 and the lines and colors are bright, especially in the drapery of the Virgin’s cloak and in the robes of St. Joseph.

The nativity of Bergamo Andrea Previtali, who lived between 1480 and 1528, a pupil of Giovanni Bellini, still mounts the original frame on the canvas. It is a small altarpiece donated in the seventeenth century to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Nascente ad Arconate from the family Arconati-Visconti.

Jacopo Bassano, on the other hand, dedicates himself to “Adoration of the shepherds“. This is a painting never seen before. The same scholars are examining it in recent months and experts have already highlighted iconographic symbols: the land is represented in two parts, one barren, the other lush, fertile. Probably in the intentions of the author the dryness of the first surface had the task of evoking the decadence of the pagan world as opposed to the rebirth of the Christian world which, on the other hand, shows itself as a luxuriant turf.

The exhibition does not only have the purpose of disseminating these masterpieces, but also the aim of bringing high school children closer to the world of art: “180 young people from all high schools in the Lecco area are trained to be able to accompany the visitor on this artistic journey – explains the professor Laura Polo D’Ambrosio, teacher of the Liceo Manzoni of Lecco – and every Saturday afternoon there are workshops for children “.

“It is an unprecedented exhibition because it contains few works, only three – adds Giorgio Cortella, Head of Communication of the event – and it is a reflection on the period we are experiencing, that of Christmas. In fact, the main theme of the exhibition is the “Birth“Narrated by three famous artists of the sixteenth century”.

The exhibition will remain open until March 5th. From 8 January 2022 every Saturday afternoon, from 4 pm onwards, free admission to listen to the choir of the students of the Civic School of Lecco.
