NATO member Turkey has applied to join BRICS

According to the agency’s anonymous sources, the administration of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes that the geopolitical center of gravity is moving away from developed economies.

According to them, the country’s new diplomatic steps reflect its desire to develop relations with all countries of the multipolar world, continuing to fulfill its obligations as a major NATO member.

Turkey, at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, applied to join BRICS months ago, frustrated by its failure to make progress in its decade-long bid to join the European Union, the sources added. The request is said to be partly due to disagreements with other NATO members after Turkey maintained close ties with Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Multiple policies

“Turkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious and effective country if it simultaneously improves relations with the East and the West,” RT Erdogan said in Istanbul last weekend. “Any other way will not benefit Turkey, it will only harm it.”

BRICS, named after Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, includes some of the largest emerging economies. At the beginning of this year, four new members joined it – Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt. Saudi Arabia has been invited to join, but the kingdom has yet to do so.

Further development of the group can be discussed on October 22-24. At the summit in Kazan, Russia, sources told Bloomberg. Malaysia, Thailand and Turkey’s close ally Azerbaijan are also seeking to join.
