The secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, made a surprise visit to the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, this Thursday, 20th. Volodymyr Zelenskystated that “the time has come” to invite the country to join the alliance.

It is the first time that the secretary has visited Ukraine since the Russian attacks, which took place in February 2022. At the beginning of the war, he reported that Ukraine would become a member of NATO, but stressed that this would happen “in the long term”.

The NATO secretary informed that the country’s entry will be discussed at the next organization meeting, but the priority at the moment is to help Ukraine with military support. Stoltenberg hopes NATO allies will support the country for as long as it takes, “allowing Ukraine to prevail as an independent sovereign nation.”

“NATO is on Ukraine’s side, we were on your side after the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014”, says Stoltenberg, who adds: “We will be on your side [em referência a Zelensky] into the future by rebuilding a brighter future for the Ukrainian people.”
